I will be on the street this weekend shooting with this gorgeous silver Olympus PEN E-PL3 and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm 1:1.8. Other than the date and time setting, I’ve not poked around this little guy much, but I will give you my first impression now.
First, let talk about the E-PL3. Doesn’t matter if it’s black, red, white or silver, the new PEN E-PL3 looks a lot more elegant than its older siblings. It seems a bit thinner and shorter than the E-P3 but feels similar in weight. Its body is now all metal except for the battery compartment door. The three-inch, 460,000-dot, 16:9 tilting LCD makes the E-PL3 a perfect compact video camera. The tilting feature also comes in handy for candid and street photography.
Now let talk about the M.Zuiko Digital 45mm 1:1.8. It’s compact and the silver paint gives it a stylistic look. When it’s mounted on a black or silver body, it will enhance the elegance, classy design of the new PEN generation. The M.Zuiko Digital 45mm 1:1.8 covers 8 f/ stops, from f/22 to f/1.8. Inside the metal cast is the 9 elements in 6 groups, with 7 circular aperture diaphragm—perfect for natural bokeh effect.
The moment I put this combination of lens and body together, I know for a fact that this setup will help me to achieve better shots in portrait, candid and street photography. Fast lens, high speed autofocus with the aid of a 35-area multiple AF with the contrast detection system from the body, tilt LCD and compact. Together, these elements make a perfect combination for my shooting style until Olympus brings out the fourth generation of the digital PEN.
